Helical Anchors for Shallow Highway Slope Protection in Canada
This Canadian highway embankment project used helical anchors, a geotextile layer and steel wire mesh to protect shallow slope soils and support vegetation recovery. Prefabricated anchors secured the surface layers to the ground, combining shallow soil restraint and erosion protection with a slope face suitable for grass cover.

The project adopted a composite slope protection system consisting of screw-in helical anchors, a geotextile layer and an external steel wire mesh facing. Bearing plates and nuts secured the facing to the slope. The system was intended to restrain shallow soil movement, reduce surface soil loss and allow grass cover to develop. Site photographs show the anchor components, the installed mesh facing and the slope after vegetation recovery.
Engineering Theoretical Explanation
Rotary installation advances each helical anchor into the slope soil. The helical plates develop resistance within the anchoring zone, while the steel rod transfers the facing load to that zone.
Bearing plates and retaining nuts hold the surface layers in place. The geotextile helps retain soil particles, while the steel wire mesh provides surface restraint between anchor points.
Anchor geometry, spacing, inclination and installation depth must suit the actual soil conditions and project design. The contribution of the system to overall slope stability requires a site-specific assessment.
