Helical Piles for Railway Embankment Reinforcement in Ireland

This double-track railway project in a lake and marshland area of Ireland used helical piles to address differential settlement in soft ground. SSP provided technical assessment, reinforcement design, product manufacturing and supply, and installation support. The piles were manufactured in China and installed by a local contractor in Ireland.

Location

Ireland

Application

Existing railway embankment reinforcement

Project start

May 2019

Manufacturing and supply

RMB 60 million
Overall summary of the project

Overall summary of the project

The project began in May 2019 to reinforce an existing double-track railway affected by differential settlement. SSP coordinated technical assessment, reinforcement design, manufacturing, supply and installation support, with Dr Zhao as the principal project contact. The project record reports that the reinforcement improved differential settlement conditions and addressed settlement-related speed restrictions.

Project Background
Weak ground in the lake and marshland section had caused differential settlement, with associated speed restrictions affecting railway operations. Reinforcement of the existing embankment required coordination of soft-ground conditions, train loading and site access. The scheme focused on embankment support and settlement control, with installation planned around night-time railway works.
Project Challenge
Select pile parameters suited to the soft ground and train loading.
Coordinate existing-track access, night-time working and the installation sequence.
Develop a load-testing plan to support construction quality control and project acceptance.

Engineering Theoretical Explanation

Helical piles are installed by rotation and transfer load through the interaction of the shaft, helices and surrounding ground.

For railway embankment reinforcement, pile geometry, layout and connections must be coordinated with ground conditions, train loading and overall deformation control.

The technical team compared reinforcement options and selected pile parameters for the project conditions. A dedicated load-testing plan supported construction quality control and project acceptance.

Pile Design and Load Testing
The technical team selected helical pile parameters for the soft-ground conditions and railway loading. Reinforcement option assessment, pile design and a dedicated load-testing plan were coordinated to support the embankment reinforcement, construction quality control and project acceptance.
Manufacturing and Project Support
The manufacturing and supply value was RMB 60 million. SSP manufactured the pile components in China and delivered them by sea to Ireland, where a local contractor carried out installation. For this project, pile foundation design consultancy and site installation guidance were provided without an additional technical service fee.
Night-time Railway Installation
A dedicated installation plan addressed existing-track access and night-time working. The photographs show excavator-mounted rotary equipment, helical piles and crews beside the track, with components staged near the installation area. SSP provided pile design and installation guidance; the local contractor organised equipment, crews and site installation.
Quick-Coupling Installation Device
The technical team developed a quick-coupling installation device for the project. The project record states that it enabled pile heads to be installed approximately 1 m below ground level. The record attributes lower manufacturing costs and improved rotary installation efficiency to the device, and states that it received a European invention patent.

Project Value

The project record reports improved differential settlement conditions and the handling of settlement-related speed restrictions along the affected railway section.
The project record reports approximately 30% lower overall pile foundation costs than local procurement, under the China-manufacturing, sea-delivery and local-installation model used for this project.
Coordinated technical assessment, pile design, installation planning and load-test planning supported delivery, with SSP providing technical and manufacturing support and the local contractor carrying out installation.
