Helical Piles for Expansive Soil Cut Slope Stabilisation on the Zhounan Expressway

This project used helical piles to stabilise expansive soil cut slopes on the Zhounan Expressway in Henan, China. SSP provided slope stability assessment, reinforcement design, pile manufacturing and supply, and construction support, and participated in site installation.

Location

Zhounan Expressway, Henan, China

Application

Expansive soil cut slope stabilisation

Project period

May 2018 to May 2019

Pile manufacturing and supply

RMB 2.33 million
Overall summary of the project

Overall summary of the project

The project reinforced expansive soil cut slopes for Henan Wanlong Expressway Co., Ltd. between May 2018 and May 2019. SSP assessed the ground conditions and slope failure mechanisms, developed the adopted reinforcement scheme, manufactured and supplied the helical piles, and participated in construction. The project record reports that the works addressed the slope instability and became a demonstration project on the Zhounan Expressway.

Project Background
The Zhounan Expressway links Zhoukou, Zhumadian and Nanyang across central and southern Henan over approximately 195 km. Its route includes expansive soil and silty soft ground. Expansive soil can adversely affect the long-term stability of subgrades, embankments and cut slopes, requiring specific assessment and design. This project addressed a section of deep cut slopes in expansive soil.
Project Challenge
Assess the expansive soil hazards and identify the failure mechanisms affecting the cut slopes.
Develop a reinforcement design and construction scheme suited to the deep cut slope conditions.
Coordinate engineering, pile manufacturing and site construction while controlling project costs.

Engineering Theoretical Explanation

The design began with the project geology and the risks associated with expansive soil, establishing the issues that the cut slope reinforcement needed to address.

The technical team calculated and analysed potential slope failure mechanisms, using the assessment to develop the corresponding helical pile reinforcement scheme.

Reinforcement design, pile supply and the construction method were coordinated for the specific slope conditions, with technical guidance supporting site implementation.

Slope Assessment and Engineering Support
SSP's technical team, led by senior geotechnical engineer Jiejun Zhao and senior civil and structural engineer Brian, reviewed the geology, expansive soil hazards and slope stability. The team provided stability analysis, assessment and technical recommendations before developing the reinforcement design.
Helical Pile Manufacturing and Installation
The project adopted SSP's design. SSP manufactured and supplied the helical piles and participated in construction. Site photographs show excavator-mounted rotary equipment advancing a pile into the slope, with the site crew assisting the installation.
Cut Slope Reinforcement Sections
The reinforcement covered the left side from chainage K103+200 to K103+279 and the right side from K103+180 to K103+283. The helical pile design and construction scheme addressed expansive soil cut slope stability within these sections. The photograph shows the completed slope protection beside the roadway.
Completed Works and Project Outcomes
The completed slope photographs show the treated cut slope and roadside setting. The project record reports that the reinforcement resolved the expansive soil slope instability and became a demonstration project on the Zhounan Expressway, providing a reference for similar slope reinforcement works in China.

Project Value

The project record reports that the helical pile reinforcement addressed expansive soil cut slope instability and provided a reference for similar highway slope projects.
The project record reports that the adopted design and construction scheme reduced project costs by 30%.
For this project, SSP provided pile foundation design consultancy and construction technical guidance without additional technical service fees.
